Vacation Treats- What I Bought in San Diego

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the remainder of the food bonanza that will be San Diego Part Two. I just need a bit of a lipstick break, ya know? I may or may not use vacation as an excuse to buy myself a few treats. In what can only be described as a convergence of the makeup universe, our hotel was a 4 min walk to an amazing mall that housed a gigantic Sephora and a standalone MAC store- both of which are 1+ hour drives from my house. A 4 minute walk? Had to be done. Multiple times.

Ultimately, I used restraint and only purchased things I’d really had my eye on. Otherwise, I would have had to sell an organ or take out a second mortgage because I would have run through both stores ‘Supermarket Sweep’ style (anyone else think that should HAPPEN? Imagine- a game show where we could fill our baskets with all the pretty things, even with one minute? The carnage.)

Let’s start with MAC. I picked up my first Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in Brighton last year on our trip back to England (notice a pattern- vacation=MAC). I’ve used this powder every day for a year and I’ve only finally hit pan. Replacing it was a must. I’m shade medium. This powder is perfect. It sets my makeup, adds a bit of coverage to really even out my foundation, but doesn’t look heavy. I convinced Lindsey to pick up one as well, so she could pair it with foundation for a full-on look, or use it on its own to even out skin and mattify.

I knew I wanted to add the Studio Finish Concealer Duo to my stash. I’ve upped my concealer game recently, but still haven’t found a great spot concealer. This is one of the most lauded and widely used concealers, so I grabbed one. I haven’t used it yet, but I’ll report back once I’ve given it a trial. It’s supposed to provide good coverage without drying and/or melting. Good for those of us with breakouts to conceal or scars to blend.

I also was on the hunt for a nude blush. My blush stash has lots and lots of vibrant blushes, but I needed a very muted nude blush. Now that my hair is platinum, I like to keep my makeup quite monotone. I find it compliments the hair nicely, and helps me look polished without over done. I did several laps at Sephora and walked away with nothing blush related. When I walked into MAC, I zeroed in on this blush almost immediately and it’s been perfect. It’s the Pro Longwear Blush in Blush All Day. A brown pink, it’s subtle and very muted. I’ve worn it almost every day since I bought it. You may or may not be seeing it in an upcoming post…

The final purchase from MAC was a lip pencil. I needed a slightly cool pink that would work with several lipsticks in my collection. After lots of swatching with the incredibly kind salesperson, I bought one that seemed to work with the shades I own. I cannot think of the name of the pencil right now, because, of course, but I’ll update this post with the name and link once I find it…

Sephora ended up being mainly lipsticks. Shocked? Of course not. I looked at so many awesome and pretty things, and I definitely added several items to my wishlist, but ultimately, I’m saving up for some pricey skin care, so I felt I couldn’t splurge on a new eye palette or anything without sabotaging my Sunday Riley goals (Good Genes, for the record. I sampled it and it’s maybe the best thing that’s ever touched my skin. I swear, redness, pigmentation, texture improved so much I couldn’t believe it.) The surprise non-lipstick item was an Anastasia Beverly Hill Brow Wiz in Medium Brown. I don’t really need to draw on my brows, but I have a few patchy spots and this is the cult and all-time revered brow product. Easy to use and matches my brows. Done and done.

After lots of coveting and store circling, in the end I got the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 03 Strawberry Kissed. It’s a deep red pink and I LOVE IT. I’d heard great things about the texture of these liquid lipsticks. I want the shade Watermelon Slice next, and I’m sure I’ll order it when it’s back in stock. I wore this on a date night out with the hubster the night I bought it. Long lasting, not too drying (I don’t know a matte formula that doesn’t dry in some way) and vibrant and awesome. And at $13, a steal. (forgive my creeper eyes in the pic below. The selfie game was not strong this night.

I also bought one of the Clinique Pop Lip ColorĀ in Poppy Pop. My love of orange lip products is well documented, and this one does not disappoint. It’s easy to apply, pigmented, and is comfortable to wear. It’s not long-lasting, and I reapply several times throughout the day, but I love this lipstick so much that I’ll probably buy more shades from the line (of course I will- it’s lipstick).

So far, I love all the products I picked up (the ones I’ve tried at least!) Let’s see if I can keep myself from ordering more of the lipsticks. 30 day goal…
